Ternopol, a centre of the Ternopol region, is located on the Seret river. The population of the city is 170 thousand. At the first time Ternopol was mentioned in the chronicles in 1540 as a castle on the ruines of the Sopilche village. The main places of interest of the city are the Castle (1540), the Vozdvizhenska Church (16th century), the Church of Nativity of Christ (1602-1608), the Church of the Dominican Monastery and Cells (1749-1779), the Arts Museum, the Musical Drama Theatre named after T.Shevchenko, the Puppet Theatre, the Philharmonic Hall.
